The Federations Begin Their Journey toward Empowerment
A story of collaboration, guidance and institutional development.
After months of preparation and community mobilization, two women-led federations were successfully established in February in Bhola district. One federation was formed by the East and West Elisha Unions, while the other represented Dhonia and Char-Samaya Unions. These federations marked an important step toward strengthening women’s leadership, collective action and community empowerment.
The federation leaders, previously engaged through the Community Level Association (CLA), already understood the importance of organizational sustainability and institutional development. With this awareness, the executive committee members immediately initiated the process of obtaining official government registration for their organizations.
To ensure proper guidance and compliance, the federation members maintained close coordination with the Department of Women Affairs. Their strong relationship with the Women Affairs Officer, built during earlier community activities, played an important role throughout the registration process. The federation leaders also invited the Women Affairs Officer to provide support during the development of their organizational by-laws.
Impressed by the federations’ governance structure, by-laws, and commitment to social development initiatives, the Women Affairs Officer recommended the organizations for official approval. As a result, on June 25, 2025, the government formally registered the Elisha Nari Unnayan Federation and the Bhola Nari Shakti Federation.
Following the registration, officials from the Department of Women Affairs conducted several orientation and discussion sessions with federation leaders, providing guidance on leadership, social development and organizational management. The department also expressed its willingness to support the federations in their future initiatives.
Demonstrating strong organizational capacity and accountability, the federation leaders then took the initiative to open official bank accounts for their organizations. After completing all required documentation, both federations successfully opened accounts with Mercantile Bank PLC.
This achievement was made possible through the continuous support, facilitation and guidance of Center for Rural Service Society under the Prochesta Project. Through sustained capacity building, mentoring and community engagement, CRSS played a vital role in strengthening the federations, enabling them to reach this milestone of official recognition and institutional development.
Today, these federations are steadily moving forward as symbols of women’s empowerment, leadership and community-driven development, creating new opportunities for participation, advocacy and social change in their communities.
