Sujata is moving towards achieving her dream
Sujata Majumder and her family reside in a remote area of Jamirbari village in Harta Union, Barishal District. The people of this area have been living in extreme poverty due to drought, floods, and lack of job availability. In this region, people essentially live on agriculture and have small businesses. Sujata is a very poor woman, but she has changed her fortune through a small duck rearing project. Her husband Dulal Roy is a fisherman, but his earnings were uncertain. So Sujata was struggling to ensure the daily needs and nutrition of her two children with the income. Sujata dreamed of giving children a proper education and eating three full meals a day and owning her own income source. Center for Rural Service Society (CRSS) provides holistic empowerment by training women in economic development, financial inclusion, and equitable gender relations amongst ultra-poor households. Sujata Majumder (Member code-021) is a member of CRSS-MVM Z- Group (Tagor Mohila Samity, code-012). She received training on Small Entrepreneurship Development & IGA from CRSS. After the training Sujata with the guidance of the CRSS field staff came up to start a small business and raise native duck rearing. Sujata's house is located beside a marshy land near the river. There is water in the marshy land for the most part of the year and a lot of snails, small fish, and earthworms are available in the water that is natural food for ducks. Besides, rice, rice burn, wheat, dry fish left over, etc. that are used as duck feed are easily available in a village setting. Therefore, the staff supported and encouraged his idea of duck farming. As per her choice CRSS provided her Taka BDT 25,000, (US$ 217) in October 2024. Sujata purchased 80 ducks for Tk.250 (US$ 2.17) each and also bought the necessary duck feed. Every day she took care of the ducks minutely. After two months most of the ducks are laying eggs every day and Sujata started to make a sale of Tk. 700 (US$ 6.08) worth of eggs per day. Considering all consumption her monthly income is now around Tk. 12000 (US$ 104). Sujata's income has enabled her to buy two calves, and her husband is helping her raise cows and ducks. Now Sujata no longer considers herself as helpless woman. Her daughter Chatoki (13) is studying in class eight and her son Diganta (11) is studying in class five. She hopes that her children will be educated and established in society. She is thankful to the Center for Rural Service Society for their assistance in achieving her dream of becoming a self-supporting woman.
